Important News on Sugar

I have previously written about sugar, for example, that “Drinking just one artificially sweetened drink every day has been associated with a three times greater risk of having a stroke or developing dementia …” https://www.josephazize.com/2017/04/23/three-news-items-on-nature/

Now more bad news has come in from The Australian newspaper, 31 July 2026, p.6, under the rubric: “Less Sugar as a Baby Will Lower Risk of Dementia.”

It says that there is evidence, published in the journal Neurology, that exposure to sugar to babies in their first two years increases the risk of dementia in later life; and of heart failure and strokes. Britain had rationing of sugar in the 1940s and 1950s. Thus, the children born in those years consumed less sugar. Researchers were able to follow up 65,000 of these low-sugar babies. It says: “They found people born during sugar rationing cut their risk of adult dementia by a fifth, compared with those born after rationing ended.”

Not only did these babies grow up to have fewer cases of dementia, but if they did develop dementia, it came two and a half years later. The benefits accrued not only to the babies who were given less sugar, but to those who had been exposed to less while they were in their mothers’ wombs.

In addition, these babies suffered less heart failure and strokes than those children born after rationing ended.

The evidence is quite suggestive: sugar seems to have damaging effects on the human organism when it is at its most vulnerable; and some of those effects are not apparent for many years.

    1. The study concerned processed sugar. Speaking more generally, a lot of honey is just as bad, I believe. Fruit is alright, but still, some fruits like mangos are extremely sweet.
